The Google Desktop search tool has been officialy released. If you’ve used the beta you’ll have been impressed with the speed and comprehensiveness of the search engine. The official release added some additional files types for indexing but most importantly added an API that allows developers to embed this functionality in their applications. For end users, there is now a “floating” search bar which you can park anywhere on your desktop and it remains visble no matter what application is running. The toolbar lets you search your PC or the Web. I expect that Microsoft, Google and Yahoo will be battling for the hearts and minds of developers. Why should online marketing people care: more searchers, more searches and more comeptition for advertising. How long before Google et al start selling sponsored ads even on desktop only searches?
